How to Tell If Trouble Codes Were Cleared Before Buying a Used Car

The Used-Car Code Clearing Scam

One of the most common used-car sales tricks is clearing diagnostic trouble codes immediately before a prospective buyer arrives for a test drive. A dishonest private seller or unscrupulous dealer buys a $15 code reader, plugs it into a car suffering from a $2,000 catalytic converter failure (P0420), an expensive transmission slip (P0741), or an active cylinder misfire (P0300), and taps "Erase Codes".

When the prospective buyer turns the ignition key, the dashboard is spotless: no Check Engine Light, no warning chimes. The car starts smoothly and drives fine during a brief 10-minute test drive around the block. The buyer pays cash, drives home, and the very next morning—after the vehicle's engine computer completes its diagnostic evaluation cycle—the Check Engine Light blazes back onto the dashboard.

Fortunately, modern OBD2 vehicle architecture makes it completely impossible for a seller to conceal this tampering. Every vehicle manufactured since 1996 logs an immutable digital trail of exactly when codes were last cleared, how many miles have been driven since the clear command, and whether internal emissions monitors have completed.

The Four Incorruptible PIDs That Reveal Code Clearing

When inspecting any used vehicle with OBDAssistant, do not look at the stored codes list first. Instead, query these four forensic telemetry parameters:

  1. Distance Traveled Since Codes Cleared (PID 0x31): This parameter records the exact odometer distance the vehicle has driven since the last time a scan tool cleared memory or the 12V battery was disconnected. If this value reads less than 50 kilometers (30 miles), the seller cleared codes immediately before you arrived. A properly maintained vehicle will typically show thousands of kilometers since the last reset.
  2. Time Run Since Diagnostic Codes Cleared (PID 0x4E): Measures accumulated engine operating time in minutes since the last reset. A reading under 60 minutes on a vehicle being offered for sale is a massive red flag.
  3. Number of Warm-Up Cycles Since Codes Cleared (PID 0x30): A warm-up cycle is defined as starting the engine cold and driving until coolant temperature rises by at least 22°C (40°F) and reaches at least 70°C (160°F). If this PID reports fewer than 3 to 5 warm-up cycles, the car has not been driven through real-world drive cycles since memory was wiped.
  4. Readiness Monitor Completion Status (PID 0x01): If the Catalyst, EVAP, or Oxygen Sensor monitors report Not Ready (often logged as P1000 on Ford/Mazda), the engine computer has not completed its testing routines. The Check Engine Light is off not because the car is healthy, but because the computer hasn't finished running its tests!

Compare the vehicle's live inspection readings against these forensic benchmarks:

Pre-Purchase Used Car Inspection Checklist

Take an ELM327 Bluetooth adapter and OBDAssistant to every used vehicle inspection and execute this exact procedure:

  1. Plug In Before Starting the Engine: Insert the adapter into the 16-pin diagnostic port under the dashboard. Turn the ignition key to ON (Engine OFF). Verify that the Check Engine Light illuminates steadily on the cluster. If the light does not illuminate with key ON engine OFF, the seller may have removed the LED bulb or painted over the instrument cluster warning lamp!
  2. Check PID 0x31 and Readiness Immediately: Open OBDAssistant and query Distance Since Codes Cleared. If the distance is under 60 km (37 miles), ask the seller directly: "Why were the codes cleared recently?" If they claim "I just changed the battery yesterday," proceed with extreme caution.
  3. Inspect Mode $07 Pending Codes: Query Pending Codes. While the dashboard MIL will not illuminate for pending codes until the second drive cycle, the ECU records faults on the first failure. If you see a pending P0420 or P0455, you know that the light will turn on permanently on your drive home.
  4. Inspect Mode $0A Permanent Codes: Query Mode $0A. If the vehicle has an active permanent code, it proves conclusively that the vehicle recently had a verified failure that has not yet completed its required confirmation drive cycles.
  5. Execute an Extended 15-Minute Test Drive: Drive the vehicle through all operating regimes: accelerate hard to highway speeds, coast down without braking, and idle in traffic. Check live misfire counters in Mode $06 to ensure no cylinder is dropping spark under load. This simple 5-minute pre-purchase scan can save you thousands of dollars in unexpected repair bills.
