Connecting Your Adapter & Running the First Scan
Welcome to OBDAssistant. Transforming your Android device into a professional dealership-tier diagnostic tool takes less than 60 seconds.
1. Finding the OBD2 Port
Under US federal law (since 1996 for gas and 2004 for diesel), every vehicle has an OBD2 port located within two feet of the steering wheel. Common locations include:
- Directly underneath the steering column.
- Behind the plastic trim panel by the driver's left knee.
- Occasionally hidden inside the center console or passenger glovebox (common in some European models).
2. Pairing the VCI (Bluetooth/WiFi)
OBDAssistant connects to any standard ELM327 or Vgate adapter. Plug the adapter in—you should see a red power LED. Then, navigate to your Android device's Bluetooth settings and pair with the device (commonly named `OBDII` or `VLINK`). The standard generic pin is usually `1234` or `0000`.
3. Running a System Scan
Open OBDAssistant. Tap the large Connect button. Once the telemetry links are established (the ECU icons turn green), navigate to the Diagnostics tab and hit Scan Faults. OBDAssistant will query every module on your vehicle's CAN Bus network instantly.
