OBD2 Emissions Readiness Monitors Explained

Written & Reviewed by Christopher Anthony Mellers (Founder & Mobile Mechanic)

Every modern vehicle contains built-in self-testing routines called Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) Readiness Monitors. When preparing for a government emissions or smog inspection, simply clearing your Check Engine Light without completing drive cycles will cause an instant automatic failure with "Not Ready" flags.

1. Continuous vs. Non-Continuous Monitors

OBD-II groups readiness monitors into two distinct categories:

Monitor Classification Monitored Subsystems Test Frequency
Continuous Monitors Misfire Detection, Fuel System, Comprehensive Components (CCM) Runs constantly while the engine is running
Non-Continuous Monitors Catalytic Converter, Heated O2 Sensors, EVAP System, EGR/VVT System Runs only under specific vehicle speed, fuel level, and thermal conditions (Drive Cycles)

2. Why Clearing Codes Resets All Monitors to "Not Ready"

When you use a scan tool to clear trouble codes or disconnect the 12V vehicle battery, the ECU clears its volatile RAM memory, resetting all non-continuous emissions monitors back to Incomplete / Not Ready status. To set them back to Ready, you must execute a manufacturer-specific Drive Cycle.

3. The Standard Universal Drive Cycle Routine

While every automaker publishes exact parameters, the universal OBD-II drive cycle to set Catalyst (P0420), EVAP (P0442, P0455), and O2 Sensor (O2 Monitors) consists of:
