It stalls when you come to a stop.

Stalling as you lift off and the revs drop to idle means the engine cannot sustain itself at its lowest operating point. The idle control strategy, the air it is metering, and the fuel it is delivering are the three places to look.

Is it safe to keep driving?

Treat this as urgent. An engine that stalls in traffic takes your power steering assistance and brake servo vacuum with it, which is a genuine safety risk when manoeuvring. Get it diagnosed before relying on the car.

General guidance, not a diagnosis of your specific vehicle. If you are unsure, do not drive it and have it inspected.

Idle control is an active process

Idle is not the throttle sitting at a fixed position. The ECU continuously adjusts airflow to hold a target, compensating for the alternator, the air conditioning compressor, the power steering pump and engine temperature. If the control path is restricted by carbon, or the valve or motor is sticking, the engine loses the compensation and dies when load arrives.

Vacuum leaks behave worst at idle

Unmetered air is a large proportion of the small airflow at idle, so the mixture goes lean exactly when the engine is most vulnerable. A leak large enough to stall the engine at a stop may be barely noticeable at speed. Positive fuel trim at idle falling back toward zero at higher revs is the signature.

The transition from closed to open loop

Lifting off and returning to idle involves a fuel cut on deceleration and then a resumption of injection. If an oxygen sensor is slow, or coolant temperature is misreported, the ECU can mismanage that transition and under-fuel the engine just as it needs to catch itself.

Charging and electrical load

A failing alternator or a low system voltage makes every actuator work less predictably, and some engines will stall under heavy electrical load when voltage sags. If the stall correlates with headlights, heated screens or the blower on full, check charging before chasing the engine.

What to watch in live data

These are the readings that separate the likely causes. OBDAssistant streams them from an ELM327 adapter while the engine is running, which is what turns a list of possibilities into a diagnosis.

ReadingWhat it tells you
Idle air control position or commanded idleA control that is pinned at one end of its range has run out of authority to compensate.
Fuel trim at idle versus 2,500 rpmHigh positive trim at idle that normalises with revs points firmly at a vacuum leak.
System voltageSagging voltage under electrical load implicates charging rather than fuelling.
Coolant temperatureA sensor misreporting a warm engine as cold, or vice versa, corrupts the whole idle fuelling strategy.

Trouble codes that match this symptom

If the car has already been scanned, these are the codes most often behind it. Each page covers the definition, likely causes, diagnostic steps and repair information.

Questions

It only stalls when the air conditioning is running.

The compressor is a significant load that engages without warning. An idle control system with no margin left cannot absorb it. The A/C is exposing the fault rather than causing it.

Could a dirty throttle body be the whole problem?

Frequently, yes — carbon on the plate and bore changes the airflow the ECU expects at a given position. Cleaning it is worthwhile, though on some vehicles the idle relearn procedure must be run afterwards or the idle will be worse before it is better.

It restarts immediately every time. Does that rule anything out?

It makes a hard fault in fuel supply or the crank sensor less likely, and points more toward idle control, a vacuum leak, or a fuelling transition problem. A car that will not restart promptly after stalling suggests a different and usually more serious set of causes.
